A referendum will be held in Iceland today on whether the country should resume talks on EU membership. Reykjavík applied for membership in July 2009. Negotiations began the following year, but were suspended in 2013, and in 2015, Iceland requested not to be considered an EU candidate country.

According to a poll, 51.3% of Icelanders support resuming talks on EU membership, while 48.7% oppose it. Should supporters of the talks win, negotiations could begin by the end of 2026 and take 18-24 months, according to a memorandum from Iceland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A victory for the proponents of negotiations would not mean automatic EU membership: a possible accession agreement would also require a separate referendum.

Currently, Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area, and also participates in the EU single market.
