A Belarusian was prevented from illegally importing half-a-billion-year-old fossils into Poland.
At the border with Poland, the inspection of a Mercedes car leaving Belarus ended with an unexpected discovery. Polish customs officers in Terespol found a whole collection of ancient creatures — trilobites, ancient shark teeth, and Ediacaran fauna fossils — under the seats, in the door pockets, and even in the document bag.

After carefully inspecting the car, customs officers counted 24 fossils. The Belarusian driver did not declare anything at the border, claiming that he had bought all these items in a Brest store and wanted to give them to friends.
The collection was transferred to the Polish State Geological Institute. Experts determined that these were not souvenirs, but objects subject to protection. Inside the set are eight trilobites, eleven ancient shark teeth, and four Ediacaran fauna fossils.

Ediacaran organisms are among the oldest on Earth. The found specimens belong to the so-called White Sea fossil assemblage, dating back 558–555 million years. They originate from the territory of the current Russian Arkhangelsk region.

According to experts, the value of this collection exceeds 27,000 zlotys (approximately $7,830). The Belarusian is now involved in a case of attempted smuggling of protected natural objects.
