Venezuela announces release of large number of political prisoners
Venezuelan authorities promise to release «a significant number» of political prisoners. This was announced by the speaker of the country's National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez. According to him, the release of both Venezuelan and foreign citizens is planned in the next few hours, Reuters reports.

Jorge Rodríguez noted that this measure, repeatedly demanded by the opposition, is an act of peace. He also emphasized that the decision is being made unilaterally and without agreement with other parties.
«The Bolivarian government, together with state institutions, has decided to release a significant number of Venezuelan and foreign citizens, and this process is already underway,» said Rodríguez, who is, incidentally, the brother of the current acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez.
Previously, Delcy Rodríguez served as vice president and was appointed acting president after the US stripped Nicolás Maduro of power. The American administration is now cooperating with her.
It is not yet clear exactly who will be released, but the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already announced that Spanish citizens will be among those freed. The head of the Spanish Foreign Ministry, José Manuel Albares, called this «a very positive step» by the Venezuelan authorities.
