Another scheduled repair begins on the first power unit of the Belarusian NPP
The Ministry of Energy of Belarus announced that on January 15, the first power unit of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant will be taken out for another, the fourth in a row, scheduled preventive maintenance. This is part of the annual maintenance campaign conducted to ensure reliable and safe operation of the nuclear plant.
The agency clarified that the repair of the first power unit will begin almost immediately after the second power unit completes its scheduled maintenance, is connected to the power grid, and reaches nominal capacity. Thus, repairs on the two power units are carried out alternately, without lengthy interruptions.
One of the most important stages of the planned work will be the reloading of nuclear fuel in the reactor. During this procedure, part of the fuel assemblies that have already exhausted their resource will be replaced with new ones. In addition, specialists will conduct large-scale diagnostics and technical maintenance of more than ten thousand units of equipment and systems.
Checks will cover reactor and turbine equipment, electrical and ventilation systems, as well as automation and control means. Special attention will be paid to operational control of the condition of metal and welds.
The Ministry of Energy emphasized that such repairs are carried out on each power unit of the BelNPP once a year. Their purpose is to ensure the stable operation of the plant and maintain the main technical parameters of the equipment.
It is noted that scheduled preventive maintenance is a common international practice for nuclear power plants, and their duration may vary depending on the complexity and scope of work.
According to official data, since its commissioning, the first power unit of the Belarusian NPP has already generated over 37 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
Earlier, on January 10, the Ministry of Energy announced the completion of repairs on the second power unit and its connection to the grid. Work on it lasted 57 days. The previous, third scheduled preventive maintenance of the first power unit took place from early December 2024 to late January 2025 and lasted 55 days.
