Protests in Iran, probably finally suppressed

Iranian authorities have effectively suppressed mass anti-government protests, which had been ongoing in the country since late December, with harsh силовыми measures. This is reported by The New York Times and Reuters , citing testimonies from residents and human rights activists.

According to Tehran residents, due to the scale of repression and the large number of casualties, street protests almost ceased this week, and the presence of security forces in the capital became pervasive, resembling conditions of martial law.

The Norwegian-based human rights organization Hengaw reported that no major demonstration has been recorded in Iran since January 11. Many cities are heavily militarized, thousands of people have been detained, and some universities are closed.

According to estimates by the Israeli Ministry of Defense, cited by The New York Times, protests sharply declined after security forces began widespread use of live ammunition and disconnected the internet.

Tehran residents interviewed by Reuters confirmed that the streets have remained relatively calm for several days. However, as internet access is partially restored, new evidence of violence is emerging. One resident of the capital reported that her 15-year-old daughter was killed by Iranian security forces after participating in a demonstration. A video from a forensic center in Tehran, confirmed by Reuters, showing dozens of bodies, is also circulating online.

Against this backdrop, US President Donald Trump, who had earlier threatened intervention in the event of mass killings of protesters, stated that Iranian authorities had allegedly canceled planned executions of over 800 people, and therefore he had temporarily refrained from strikes on Iran. Official Tehran did not confirm such plans and did not comment on Trump's words. One resident of the capital told NYT that after the suppression of protests, disappointment and disillusionment prevail in society.

Data on the number of casualties vary significantly. The American human rights organization HRANA reports at least 2677 victims, most of whom are protesters. An Iranian official earlier cited a figure of about 2000 dead from both sides. At the same time, according to CBS News sources, the actual number of victims could be much higher, reaching 20,000 people.
