France reports details on Russian shadow tanker detained in the Mediterranean Sea
The detained tanker turned out to be the oil tanker Grinch, which was sailing from Murmansk under a false flag, the French Mediterranean Maritime Prefecture reported .

The detention took place on January 22 in the Alboran Sea — in the western Mediterranean Sea, near the Strait of Gibraltar. The operation was carried out based on Art. 110 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and aimed to verify the true ownership of the vessel, as it was suspected of using a false flag. In addition to France, Great Britain also participated in the detention of the tanker.

The inspection of documents on board confirmed the suspicions of the French authorities, so the case was handed over to the prosecutor in Marseille.

In accordance with international law and at the prosecutor's request, the tanker was diverted from its route and, accompanied by the national fleet, was directed to a special anchorage for further inspection.
According to BFMTV, the tanker was sailing under the flag of the Comoros, under which it also appears on marine traffic tracking websites. The tanker regularly delivered oil to ports in China and India.
BFMTV also notes that in the British list of Russian shadow fleet tankers, it is known as Grinch, and in the European and American lists — as Carl.
