Tsikhanouskaya in the European Parliament Warned the EU Against Lifting Sanctions on Russia and Lukashenka
On September 29 in Brussels, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke at the second European Union Parliamentary Democracy Forum. In her speech, Tsikhanouskaya addressed the threats facing democracy, foreign interference, and disinformation.

The event was organized by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola with the support of Vice-Presidents Katarina Barley and Esteban González Pons. The Forum is attended by members of national parliaments, representatives of civil society, and international organizations.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke about the role of civil society, support for Ukraine and Belarusian democratic forces, as well as the need to maintain pressure on the regimes of Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Vladimir Putin and strengthen the resilience of European societies.
Tsikhanouskaya noted that in democratic countries, there can sometimes be a temptation to make deals with dictators. In her opinion, however, concessions should not be seen as a way to achieve long-term results, because dictators may perceive them as weakness.
She called for continued sanctions against Russia and Lukashenka, but at the same time, to strengthen society and democratic institutions. According to Tsikhanouskaya, military strength alone is not enough to defend democracy — people ready to defend their values are also needed.
The Belarusian democratic leader also called on European democracies not to take freedom for granted, to support civil society and democratic institutions, and to continue aid to Ukraine.
