Germany demanded a cut of hundreds of billions of euros from the EU budget project. Belarusian culture is also financed by the EU budget

Otherwise, with the support of Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark, it threatens to block the financial plan for the next seven years.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and leaders of five other European Union countries have threatened not to support the bloc's next seven-year budget if spending is not cut by "hundreds of billions" of euros. This was reported by the Financial Times, which reviewed a joint letter from the heads of state.

The document was signed by the leaders of Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and Finland. The EU budget "must be fundamentally reformed," and its participants need to "make a choice," the letter states.

"If the budget is not cut by hundreds of billions, there will be no agreement this year," a diplomat from one of the signatory countries told FT.

These six states provide about 40% of the EU budget's revenue. They demand a significant reduction from the €2 trillion proposed by the European Commission, explaining their position by the need to curb public spending.

In recent years, European Union funds have become the main source of financing for Belarusian culture, aid to those repressed in Belarus, and Belarusian media, which is why Belarusian national interests also depend on the structure and content of the EU budget. The totalitarian dictatorship in Belarus criminally punishes any financing of independent initiatives. This has made European funding a "lifeline" for the Belarusian language, identity, and society. In fact, today they are preserved through the taxes of those Belarusians who live or work in the EU.

The largest share of the European Union budget is spent on leveling the development of poorer EU countries — investments in Central and Eastern European countries, as well as on supporting agriculture. A reduction in the union's budget could lead to a slowdown in the economic growth of Poland and the Baltic states.
