Belarus mini-football team retains slim chances of reaching Euro 2026 quarterfinals

For this to happen, a series of incredible conditions must be met in the final round of the group stage, writes football.by.

Yesterday, Belarusians suffered their second defeat in the tournament – against the Spanish national team (0:2), while one of the championship hosts, the Slovenian national team, where Belarusians play, was stronger than the Belgian team (5:4).

Tournament standings after two rounds:

  • Spain — 6 points
  • Slovenia — 3
  • Belgium — 3
  • Belarus — 0

Thus, to take second place in the group and advance to the quarterfinals, the Belarusian national team needs two conditions to be met:

  • Belgium's defeat by any score against Spain;
  • Belarus's victory over Slovenia with a difference of at least seven goals.

In case of an equal number of points, the first criterion for determining the teams' places in the standings is head-to-head matches.

If Belarus, Belgium, and Slovenia accumulate three points each, the goal difference in matches between these three teams will be taken into account first. For the Belgians, it is currently +3 and will not change, while for Belarusians, it is -4.

This is precisely why our team needs to win against the Slovenians with a difference of at least seven goals.

The matches Slovenia — Belarus and Spain — Belgium will take place on Thursday, January 29, and both will start at 19:30.
