In Bavaria, a suspect escaped during an arrest right under the noses of the police. According to preliminary data, he used handcuff keys bought online for the escape, writes the Telegram channel "What's up with the Germans?".
The man was eventually found, but the incident revealed an unpleasant fact: there are universal keys that fit most models of police handcuffs.
An investigation by Bavarian Public Radio and Television showed: they can be legally purchased online, and they cost about 10 euros! But the police hope that the uncontrolled sale of keys will soon be banned — the manufacturer has already hired lawyers for this purpose.
Police emphasize that such escape cases are very rare. Formally, everything is in order with the model of handcuffs used by Bavarian police. It has been on the market since 2009 and has received the necessary certification.
But the fact of the escape itself revealed a problem in security procedures. An internal investigation is currently underway: they are checking how the suspect brought the key and whether any mistakes were made during the search.
The Bavarian Police Union has already expressed serious concern and called for the development of handcuffs with individual keys, exclusively designed for the police. However, this will require coordination between state and federal agencies, meaning quick solutions should not be expected.
By the way, there is no law in Germany that prohibits escape. The Munich Higher Regional Court is convinced: "Behavior arising from a person's natural desire for freedom should not be subject to punishment." And the right to strive for freedom was enshrined in laws as early as the 16th century.
