The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the strikes and stated that they were a response to recent attacks against two Iranian banks. IRGC spokesman Ali Mohammad Nain warned that if similar actions are repeated, all branches of American banks in the region could become legitimate targets.
Earlier, on March 11, two naval drones crashed into the American tanker Safesea Vishnu in the Iraqi port of Khor al-Zubair. At the time of the attack, the vessel was reloading about 53 thousand tons of oil. After a strong explosion, the port side of the ship caught fire. All 28 crew members were forced to jump into the water, and one person died. The operating company Safesea Group from New Jersey stated that the attack was deliberate and pre-planned.
According to Reuters, since the start of the US and Israel war against Iran, at least 16 tankers and other vessels in the Persian Gulf have been attacked. Hundreds more ships have anchored, fearing strikes in or near the Strait of Hormuz. About a fifth of the world's oil supplies pass through this strait.
