American rapper and DJ Afrika Bambaataa died on Thursday in Philadelphia from complications of an oncological disease. He was 67 years old, writes BBC.
Bambaataa (real name — Lance Taylor) is called a pioneer and the "godfather" of hip-hop. He is best known for his hit Planet Rock, released in 1982.
In recent years, Bambaataa faced accusations of sexual harassment that occurred in the 1980s and 1990s, and in 2025 paid compensation as part of a court settlement.
