Last week, the grandson of former Cuban leader Raul Castro approached a wealthy Havana businessman with a request to deliver a secret letter personally to US President Donald Trump, bypassing usual diplomatic channels, reports The Wall Street Journal, citing American officials.
The letter was formatted as a diplomatic note and bore an official Cuban seal. The message offered Trump economic and investment agreements, as well as a relaxation of sanctions. The letter also contained a warning that the Cuban regime was preparing for a US invasion, an American official added.
Trump had previously repeatedly stated that Cuba could be the next country, after Venezuela and Iran, on which the US would focus close attention.
Before that, Trump had stated his intentions to "take Cuba in one form or another" and spoken about the possibility of action against the country after other foreign policy conflicts. In response, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that the country is ready to resist in the event of an invasion and will defend itself to the end.
Washington is also developing a plan for a military operation on the island.
