The Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale has been decided to reopen this year. The European Union threatens to withdraw funding
The European Union has seriously warned the organizers of the Venice Biennale about possible financial consequences due to the decision to allow Russia to participate in the 2026 exhibition. The grant in question amounts to 2 million euros, which the EU plans to allocate over three years. If the Biennale's position does not change, funding may be suspended or completely canceled, writes Deutsche Welle.

The reason for the conflict is that Russia will once again have the opportunity to open its national pavilion at the Biennale for the first time since 2022, when the full-scale war against Ukraine began. Brussels considers such a decision incompatible with the overall EU policy aimed at isolating Russia in response to its actions.
The European Commission first contacted the Italian government, and then — directly the fund organizing the Biennale. The organizers were given 30 days to explain their position and respond to the claims. The EU is now awaiting this response and will decide whether to take further action.
Representatives of the European Commission emphasize that the Biennale's decision has caused sharp criticism, with some EU officials already stating that they do not plan to visit the exhibition. It is also noted that Russia's return is seen as undermining the common European position.
At the same time, the Biennale organizers claim that they do not have full control over national pavilions, as they belong to the states themselves. The Biennale management also emphasizes that the event is traditionally open to all countries.
From the Russian side, participation is presented as a cultural project intended to show that art exists outside of politics. It is reported that dozens of cultural representatives from various countries will be involved in the program, and the project itself will be aimed at an international audience.
The 61st Venice Biennale is scheduled to take place from May 9 to November 22, 2026, in the Giardini, Arsenale, and other venues in Venice.
