In the Belarusian special services, espionage in foreign countries under diplomatic cover is carried out by the Foreign Intelligence Directorate of the KGB Central Apparatus and the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces. This is military intelligence, its abbreviated name is GRU. Diplomatic cover is the embedding of special service representatives into diplomatic positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the MFA apparatus, representatives of special services are permanently concentrated in the Diplomatic Security Directorate, which is divided into a classified secrecy department, an internal security sector, and a special communications sector. All leadership and key positions in it are held by special service officers.
