Wife of deceased Belarusian volunteer demands changes to law on "Hero of Ukraine" title, which cannot be awarded to foreigners
The widow of Kastus Kalinouski Regiment fighter Aliaksei Lazarau appealed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with a call to grant foreign volunteers the right to receive Ukraine's highest state award. She published a corresponding petition, which she asks people to sign.
The woman demands that the Verkhovna Rada and Volodymyr Zelenskyy eliminate legislative inequality that allows the title of Hero of Ukraine to be awarded exclusively to citizens of the country, leaving out foreigners who gave their lives for its independence.
On her deceased husband's X page, the woman published an emotional appeal.
"My husband never expected gratitude. He was ideological, consistent in his views, but injustice always bothered him. I want to achieve that foreign volunteers, who have been fighting for Ukraine's independence since 2014, have the right to receive the title 'Hero of Ukraine'."
Because they deserve it. This is not about special treatment; it's about equality in this matter. A bill on changes to the legislation was introduced back in 2022. But it remained unnoticed," she writes.
She adds that it doesn't matter to her whether her husband is given the title "Hero of Ukraine" — "he probably would have been pleased, but it was never his goal."
According to the woman, foreigners could have lived their best lives in other countries, but they chose to fight for justice and truth, and many — at the cost of their own lives. But they chose to fight. And many gave their all for it, because they gave their lives.
The petition, published today, has been signed by 91 people out of the required 25 thousand.
