Doctor explained which foods will help lower cholesterol without pills

High cholesterol is often a result of our daily habits. In the early stages, an alternative to statins can be found. To improve test results by 10-15%, it is enough to change the type of porridge, love legumes, and start having breakfast on time, says the doctor.

Is there an alternative to statins? Doctor Tamara Turbinskaya spoke about this on the talk show "PRO ЗДАРОЎЕ" (PRO HEALTH), writes sb.by.

— There are plant components called phytosterols. They are found in many foods, including plant fiber, — noted the doctor.

According to her, 1.5 cups of oatmeal contain enough fiber.

— And we're not talking about flakes, but about groats that need to be soaked overnight and cooked for half an hour. With regular intake, cholesterol decreases by 10-15%, — says the specialist.

Pumpkin fiber can also help.

— It's sold, it's affordable, — says Tamara Turbinskaya. — You can buy fiber from flax seeds and milk thistle. Take half a teaspoon, mix it in 0.5-1 glass of water (warm or room temperature), take twice a day with food. Alternatively, you can add it to dishes, for example, to porridge.

Another effective product for lowering "bad" cholesterol is legumes. They can also be added to your diet 2-3 times a week. They should not be eaten raw; it's better to boil or bake them.

Phytosterols are also found in nuts and sesame. The optimal daily intake of nuts is about 30 g.

— That's, for example, eight walnuts. But they should not be salted, roasted, or glazed. They should be eaten fresh or lightly dried in the oven. It's best to consume them before 5:00 PM, — said Tamara Turbinskaya.

The doctor drew attention to another factor affecting cholesterol:

— The time you have breakfast in the morning affects it. In the morning, the body is already ready to eat. If you wake up and take a long time to get going, not eating anything for an hour, — that's a blow to the gallbladder.

Physical activity also plays a role. It is believed that 150 minutes of active movement per week helps. And this is not walking. Active movement is when the pulse quickens to 100 and the person sweats.

According to the specialist, it is also important to observe a sleep-wake regimen.

— If a person swaps day and night, it's worth considering that the body is naturally designed for something else. Therefore, the topic of cholesterol will be relevant for them. It's much better if you go to bed at the same time, optimally from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and sleep for at least 6-8 hours, — added Tamara Turbinskaya.
