Zelenskyy spoke about the conflict between Fedorov and Syrskyi, which led to the dismissal of Ukraine's Minister of Defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained that one of the reasons for the dismissal of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov was a conflict between the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the military command.
According to him, the Ministry of Defense should be responsible for supplying the army, while conducting operations and managing the army falls under the competence of the military, writes Suspilne.
"There cannot be a conflict at such a level between leaders. If there is an operation on the battlefield, the military directly handles it. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine is responsible for provision. If someone steps into another's area of responsibility, it will inevitably lead to conflict. And a conflict did happen — a very serious one," Zelenskyy said.
According to him, at the beginning of Fedorov's work at the Ministry of Defense, they agreed on the delimitation of powers. Zelenskyy also mentioned the presentation of the "Ministry of War" concept, under which the Chief of the General Staff would actually have to subordinate to the Minister of Defense. Zelenskyy asked to abandon such a model, but Fedorov tried to implement a similar approach in other ways. Syrskyi, in turn, "began to respond with his bureaucracy to another bureaucracy," Zelenskyy added.
During one of the meetings, Fedorov suggested "honestly dismissing both." Zelenskyy replied that personnel decisions would be made sequentially, as he did not consider it possible to simultaneously change both the Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief during wartime.
Zelenskyy also stated that Fedorov and Syrskyi had practically stopped communicating directly and only discussed issues during meetings in his office.
Two weeks before the personnel decision, he suggested they meet independently and resolve their differences, but this did not happen.
At the same time, Zelenskyy emphasized that he has a positive attitude towards Fedorov and noted his achievements in digitalization. After the decision to change the leadership of the Ministry of Defense, the President of Ukraine, according to him, offered him various options for further work four times.
"I offered him 4 times different formats for further work in the team for our state. Usually, I don't meet with people 4 times to offer them a job. (...) Mykhailo refused all 4 offers. Well, that's his choice," Zelenskyy said.
Mykhailo Fedorov was removed from the post of Minister of Defense of Ukraine on July 15.
