An art object, placed at the entrance to the village Novaya Mysh in Baranavichy district, has drawn attention on social media.
The settlement Mysh is first mentioned in archival documents in the 1st half of the XV century as a village in the Navahrudak district. Its name originates not from the animal mouse, but from the Myshanka river, on which the village stands.
As for the hydronym itself, its root "mysh-", as is often the case in Belarus, is apparently not Slavic but Baltic. Specific words from which the river's name might have originated, having significantly transformed during use, include those present in the modern Lithuanian language, such as "maža" (small) or "miškas" (forest).
One can also encounter a folk legend claiming that a boyar named Myshka once lived in these parts, whose daughter drowned in the river, and thereafter the river was named in her memory. However, like the vast majority of folk legends concerning toponymy and hydronymy, this version has no even indirect confirmation in historical sources.
