The fervent supporter of a union with Russia was 85 years old.
Siarhiej Kascijan was born on January 15, 1941, in the village of Usochi, Klichaw district, Mahilioŭ region, into a large peasant family. He graduated from a construction school in Chelyabinsk, and worked as a carpenter at the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant. Later, he returned to Komsomol and party bodies in the Mazyr district, taught at the Mazyr State Pedagogical Institute, defended his candidate dissertation, and became a Doctor of Political Science and a professor.
He was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the XIII convocation, a deputy of the House of Representatives. He was the chairman of the Belarusian Slavic Committee, the Slavic Parliamentary Union, a member of the International Slavic Committee, and a member of the Presidium of the European Forum for Peace. He was also the Secretary of the Communist Party of Belarus and even the first director of the editorial and publishing institution «Literature and Art» (2002).
He was a terrible anti-Belarusian, a fanatical supporter of Lukashenka.
In his 2005 story «The Carolers,» Uladzimir Lobach depicted Deputy Kascijan as Deputy Katsian:
«...last week, the Master himself, during a regular meeting, asked to honor the memory of the crazed Deputy Katsian with a moment of silence. The poor man was caught by nationalists and forced to read the entire archive of his 'Niva,' starting from 1906. It was clear that the mind of the elderly deputy, which was not known for its firmness anyway, had hopelessly 'drifted.' Now, as people said, Katsian could periodically be seen near the Ministry of Truth, where he poked officials in the face with that very 'Niva' and loudly demanded: 'So, subscribe!'»
