"Is it normal that tickets are now sold based on residence registration?": A Belarusian woman surprised by price differences at Vitebsk Museum

Residents of Vitebsk can see the exhibition "Marc Chagall. Over the Town" at the Vitebsk Art Museum three times cheaper than all other visitors.

In the "Art Museum" branch of the Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, the exhibition "Marc Chagall. Over the Town" is running until September 13. The main exhibit is the painting "Over the Town," which was brought from Moscow, as this legendary work of art is preserved in the Tretyakov Gallery.

The museum's website states that tickets for the Chagall exhibition cost differently: from 2.5 to 5 rubles for residents of Vitebsk and from 7.5 to 15 rubles for all others.

This raised questions for Rima, a Belarusian woman. "'Is it normal that tickets are now sold based on residence registration? No Vitebsk registration — pay 3 times more. It's simply a circus,'" she wrote on Threads.

In the comments, the woman added that she is aware of the practice in other countries — when museum entry costs more for foreigners. However, she emphasized that in this case, it's about Belarusians having to pay differently.

However, commenters did not support Rima. They pointed out that the Chagall exhibition is the only one where Vitebsk residents can get a significant discount: "'Locals maintain this museum with their taxes all year round, so why should they pay the same as tourists?'", "'Without residence registration, the cost is 15 rubles, which is a drop in the ocean. And in general, it's normal, one might say, a tribute to the city and its residents.'", "'To complain about a ticket difference equivalent to a cup of coffee, really...'"
