In recent years, the white wedding dress has found an unexpected competitor: the skirt suit. Such looks are increasingly chosen by celebrities, and designers are including them in high fashion collections.

Harper’s Bazaar explored why this is happening.
Singer Dua Lipa's look at her recent wedding to actor Callum Turner became one of the most discussed fashion events of the past week. The reason was not only the star's status but also her choice: a fitted jacket with surreal gold buttons and a narrow straight skirt from Schiaparelli, which flowed into a train at the back.

The singer's wedding look was seemingly inspired by Bianca Jagger. When former actress Bianca married music legend Mick Jagger in 1971, she wore a white Yves Saint Laurent tuxedo, a long bias-cut silk skirt, and a large hat.

And although for most brides a skirt suit remains an atypical choice, in the fashion world this silhouette is increasingly being called one of the main wedding trends for the coming years.
Previously, suits were often chosen by women who wanted to look elegant but did not wish to follow the path of a classic bride in a lavish white dress.
Among them was French model and designer Inès de la Fressange. At her own wedding in 1990, she appeared in a cream jacket and a veiled hat – a decision that sharply contrasted with the opulent aesthetics of the late 1980s.

Later, in 2008, Carrie Bradshaw, the character from the movie "Sex and the City," made a similar choice. For her marriage, she initially opted for a cream vintage skirt suit, but later yielded to persuasion and chose a luxurious gown.
However, in both fashion and popular culture, such looks long remained the exception rather than the rule. Most brides still preferred traditional dresses.
Why the suit?
The situation began to change with a shift in the very understanding of weddings. After years when social networks pushed couples towards increasingly larger and more expensive celebrations, the popularity of intimate ceremonies is growing. Many couples opt for civil registry ceremonies, small family celebrations, or conscious minimalism instead of a grand show.

The requirements for wedding attire have also changed. Modern brides are less and less looking for a fairytale princess image. It is much more important to look organic and maintain one's own style. Therefore, instead of lavish dresses with corsets, they increasingly choose items that resemble their everyday wardrobe, but in a more formal execution.

A skirt suit has another advantage — practicality. While a wedding dress often goes into the closet for decades after the celebration, the jacket and skirt can be worn separately even after the wedding. For a generation increasingly thinking about smart consumption, this is an important argument.

Leading fashion houses are also supporting this trend. Similar silhouettes have recently appeared in the collections of Schiaparelli, Tom Ford, and Chanel. Designers are offering a modern interpretation of the classic women's suit — with an accentuated waist, defined shoulders, and narrow skirts.

Celebrities are also contributing to the adaptation of this trend. During the press tour for the film "Challengers," Zendaya effectively demonstrated what a modern, less formal wedding wardrobe could look like. One of the most striking looks was a light skirt suit by Stella McCartney.

It is likely that the skirt suit will never completely displace the traditional wedding dress. But all signs indicate that it has already secured its place among the main alternative options for brides.
