"He was a hermit, but he was calm." What is known about the pensioner who shot at police in Astravets district
"After his mother was killed by some alcoholic and thrown into a well, M. started having mental issues. It's been about twenty years since then," one of the residents recounted.

In the Astravets district, a 65-year-old man opened fire on police officers who had arrived to check a report of threats to neighbors. The security forces used lethal force, and the man died.
Later, local residents of nearby villages told Onliner about the life of the man who shot at the police officers.
The village of Staraya Rudnya, where the emergency occurred last night, is located in the Astravets district. The man who shot, named M., lived on a secluded farmstead right in the forest — a little away from the village itself, where only a few residential houses remain.
According to residents of neighboring villages, M. once worked as a forester, but in recent years, he lived "like a hermit."
Electricity to his house was cut off — apparently for non-payment.
— After his mother was killed by some alcoholic and thrown into a well, M. started having mental issues. It's been about twenty years since then, — one of the residents of the neighboring village Antonishki told Onliner.
The woman said she learned about yesterday's incident from her son: no shots were heard in their village.

Another house is located not far from the farmstead. According to locals, a summer resident from Smarhon arrives there during the warm season. It was he who called the police when M. started shooting.
— All this started yesterday at ten in the evening. But I saw him [M.] at three in the afternoon. He was cycling to the cemetery to his mother, and then back. We talked. I asked about his health, he said it was poor, that he had no money. I said: "Wait, I'll at least give you some bread." But he left, he didn't want to take anything…
According to another local resident, everyone around knew M. She also confirms that the man's behavior changed significantly after his mother's tragic death.

— He had some quirks. Sometimes he would say that a priest was sitting on his pine tree or that someone was guarding him there or wanted to kill him, — recalls resident T.
According to her, M. never processed his pension, although he was already of age. They said that the man still had an old Soviet-style passport, and probably because of this, there were problems with documents.
— He was such a loner. Although he has a native brother. He lives in a village near Astravets.
— How do you think he got the weapon? Was he a hunter?
— I don't know. He lived completely alone in that forest, maybe that's why he kept a shotgun.
— Did he show aggression before?
— Oh, no-o-o. He was calm. But lately, he didn't let people get close to him. Only the man who came from Smarhon. His house is not far from the farmstead. He came to the mobile shop this Saturday, bought sugar, a loaf of bread and brought it to M…
