Does a smartphone attract lightning? Rescuers explained whether you need to turn off your phone during a thunderstorm
During severe bad weather, many people turn off their gadgets, fearing to become a target for an electrical discharge. The Ministry of Emergency Situations explained how mobile phones affect safety during a thunderstorm.
As rescuers note, it is not required to completely turn off your mobile phone during a thunderstorm. Modern smartphones are safe to use: they do not attract lightning and do not create conditions for it to strike.
Real danger arises only when a person holds the phone in their hands and is in an open space — for example, in a clear field or on a hill. In such a case, the human body becomes the tallest object in the area. The risk of being struck increases not because of the phone itself, but precisely because of the unprotected state of the person. Smartphone radiation has nothing to do with it.
That is why the main rule is not to use your phone outside if there is no reliable shelter nearby.
As for indoors, mobile communication can be used without restrictions here. The main thing is to avoid wired devices and not to stand near windows.
To weather a thunderstorm without consequences, rescuers recommend following basic safety rules.
If you are at home
Close windows, stay away from them and open spaces.
Do not use wired phones and do not touch household appliances plugged into an outlet.
Avoid proximity to metal structures.
If a thunderstorm caught you on the street
Immediately take cover in the nearest building or car.
If you are in a forest, it is better to hide among low vegetation. Always stay away from power lines and solitary tall trees.
It is strictly forbidden to run, swim in water bodies, and approach water.
Cyclists and motorcyclists should immediately stop, move approximately 30 meters away from their two-wheeled transport, and wait out the bad weather there.
If there is no shelter at all, find a dry ditch or trench, squat down there (or lie on the ground), bowing your head.
If you are in a group, it is better to squat down separately and not touch other people.
