After reports of destroyed repeaters, MTS announced a tender for infrastructure restoration in Polesia

Belarusian mobile operator MTS has announced a tender for the restoration of a communications tower in the village of Tonezh, Lelchitsy district, near the Belarusian-Ukrainian border. The procurement appeared after reports of an attack by Ukrainian drones on the object, which could have been used by Russian military personnel as a repeater for controlling "Shahed" drones, "Flagstock" writes .

JSC "Mobile TeleSystems" (MTS) has announced a tender for construction and installation works (CIW) to restore one of its mobile base stations in the Gomel region.

In the terminology of cellular operators, a base station (BS) is a tower and a complex of electrical equipment that ensures signal transmission.

The base station, where restoration work is required, has the number 1499. As "Flagstock" found out, it is located near the culture center in the village of Tonezh, Lelchitsy district, Gomel region.

The procurement documentation does not specify what exact damages the base station sustained. However, a complete set of drawings for metal structures and electrical equipment is attached to it.

The initial contract price for the restoration of the 39-meter structure is almost 700 thousand Russian rubles (about 9 thousand dollars). Information about the procurement cost is posted on a Russian electronic platform.

It is noteworthy that at present, this is the only MTS procurement that specifically involves construction and installation work for the restoration of an object.

It is noteworthy that on July 5, the independent Belarusian publication This Minsk Media reported on a Ukrainian strike on a tower near Lelchitsy. The publication referred to an unnamed source and specified that a fire started after the first attempt to strike.

"They didn't hit it the first time — after the drone fell, a forest fire started. When they came to put it out, they witnessed a second approach: it hit the tower directly. Local residents were strictly forbidden to talk about what happened, and even to leave their homes. But everyone here knows everything," one of This Minsk Media's interlocutors said.

"Flagstock" checked whether fires were recorded in the area of Tonezh village. As the FIRMS service shows, an ignition was registered on the afternoon of June 28, approximately three kilometers northeast of the MTS base station.

How events unfolded

By mid-June, Ukraine had repeatedly tried through closed channels to convince Minsk to disable the repeaters used by Russian drones. According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, there was no response.

On June 19, Volodymyr Zelenskyy effectively issued a week-long ultimatum to Minsk, stating that if the problem was not resolved, Ukraine "would resolve this problem itself."

On June 24, Zelenskyy announced that four repeaters in the Gomel and Brest regions had stopped working since June 22.

On the night of June 26, five Russian "Shahed" drones (or their imitators) flew from the territory of Belarus towards Korosten, likely again using repeaters.

On June 29, former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that one repeater in Belarus was still being turned on, but expressed doubt that this would happen again. When asked why they would no longer be turned on, he replied that he could not disclose all the details, and added that, in his opinion, Belarus understands that this should not be done.

Thus, the base station in the village of Tonezh may be the same one Oleksandr Syrskyi mentioned on June 29.

However, this is not the only possible location where repeaters were disabled. "Flagstock" also received information about damage to a tower in Loev on the evening of June 24. In addition, there were reports of an explosion at a tower in the village of Parechcha, Pinsk district, although the exact date of this incident is unknown.
