Indian "cockroaches" achieved resignation of Education Minister with mass protests

India's Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned after massive youth protests, which became the largest in the country in recent years. The reason for the dissatisfaction was another leak of answers to the entrance exam for medical universities. Participants of the actions learned about the minister's resignation during a rally and met the news with applause and celebration, Reuters reports .

Pradhan announced his decision on social networks. He stated that he was resigning to prevent, in his words, "anti-national forces" from exploiting the situation for their own benefit. The minister also noted that he respects the aspirations, feelings, and legitimate expectations of the country's youth.

Renowned Indian activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk, who went on a hunger strike for 26 days in support of the protesters, called the minister's resignation a victory for peace, patience, and perseverance.

After the announcement of the resignation, the participants of the protests began to celebrate. They chanted the patriotic slogan "Jai Hind," meaning "Victory to India," listened to the national anthem, and sweets were distributed among the crowd. One of the protest participants, Tluanga Ralte, stated that this was a victory for the Constitution and proof that the young generation is ready to fight for their rights.

According to journalists' reports, at least a thousand police officers were present during the protests in New Delhi. A few hours before the news of the minister's resignation, law enforcement officers used tear gas against the protesters, trying to disperse the demonstration before another meeting between representatives of the protest movement and government members.

The reason for the mass protests was a scandal surrounding entrance exams to medical universities. In May 2026, authorities canceled the results of exams for two million applicants after new suspicions of leaked exam materials. For many Indian families, admission to a medical university is considered one of the main opportunities to escape poverty, so they prepare for the exams for years. However, cases of selling answers, which gave an advantage to those who could pay for them, have been repeatedly uncovered in the country.

In June, the youth organization Cockroach Janta Party became the organizer of the protests. This name appeared after a judge insultingly compared young unemployed Indians to cockroaches.

The founder of the organization, a 30-year-old activist, began a sit-in protest, and later Sonam Wangchuk joined him, declaring a hunger strike. Later, authorities forcibly hospitalized him.

Gradually, the demands of the protesters went far beyond just the resignation of the Education Minister. People began to express outrage at the high level of corruption, the lack of jobs for young people, and the government's lack of accountability.

Particularly strong indignation was caused by the events of July 20, when police prevented demonstrators from reaching the parliament building, using batons and tear gas. As a result, dozens of students were injured.

In an attempt to curb the further development of protests in the capital, authorities temporarily restricted internet access and closed 18 metro stations. Despite this, the protest movement gained the support of opposition politicians, who disrupted parliamentary proceedings in solidarity.
