Buckingham Palace has published a full statement confirming Andy Burnham's appointment as Prime Minister.
"His Majesty received in audience the Right Honourable Andrew Burnham, MP, and invited him to form a new government. The Right Honourable Andrew Burnham accepted His Majesty's offer and, following his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, took the traditional oath of allegiance."
Burnham will succeed his Labour Party colleague Keir Starmer as Prime Minister.
Burnham is the 59th Prime Minister in British history since 1721. On the other hand, this is only the 10th Labour government in history.
Burnham has been Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017.
