Witkoff and Kushner in Moscow were accompanied by a US Treasury official responsible for sanctions
Gene Lang participated in a preparatory meeting with Putin's representative Kirill Dmitriev, but was not present at the negotiations with the Russian leader himself. Axios suggests that American sanctions were discussed in Moscow.
Acting head of the US Treasury Department's sanctions policy, Gene Lang, joined Donald Trump's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during their visit to Moscow, Axios reports.
Lang participated in a preparatory meeting with the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and Putin's special representative Kirill Dmitriev. He was not present at the three-hour meeting between Witkoff, Kushner, and Putin.
According to Axios, the presence of an official responsible for sanctions policy indicates that American restrictions against Russia were one of the topics of the negotiations.
A White House representative confirmed to the publication that employees from the National Security Council, the State Department, and the Treasury Department participated in the meetings in Moscow.
"The parties discussed concrete plans for further actions, which will be announced in the coming weeks, and look forward to similarly productive meetings tomorrow in Ukraine," he stated.
Last week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Washington would not ease economic restrictions against Russia until it stops the war in Ukraine.
On Sunday, Witkoff and Kushner are expected in Kyiv.
