President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that an assassination attempt on Ihor Obolenskyi, commander of the 13th Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine "Khartia," was thwarted on July 31.
According to Zelenskyy, the attacker and his possible accomplice have been detained. The President reported that he spoke with Obolenskyi and also heard a report from Oleksandr Poklad, the acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine. Investigative and procedural actions in the case are ongoing.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will definitely respond to the assassination attempt on the military commander. He also thanked Obolenskyi for his service and wished him to fight even more actively against the Russian occupation forces.
The "Khartia" brigade confirmed the information about the assassination attempt and expressed gratitude for the support. They stated that they understand the danger from the enemy and are ready to confront it both at the front and in the rear. Representatives of the brigade also promised to respond to the attempted assassination on the battlefield.
