Minsk healthcare chief got free renovations. Result: 8 years in prison for bribes
Ambitious and promising Ihar Yurkevich was one of the top officials in the medical field, aspiring to become a minister.

Since 2023, Yurkevich held the position of chairman of the healthcare committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee. Before that, from February 2019, he headed the capital's 6th City Clinical Hospital.
The official was detained last year for bribery.
The verdict has now become known. The prosecution, without naming him, reports that the man was convicted for helping a commercial company obtain contracts for equipment for medical institutions.
He received money and building materials, and renovations were performed for free in his house.
As determined by the court, from February 2024 to May 2025, Yurkevich repeatedly received bribes from a representative of a commercial company. The amount of the bribe exceeded 40,000 rubles.
The official was found guilty under Part 3 of Article 430 of the Criminal Code and sentenced to eight years in a high-security penal colony. He was also fined 600 basic units — 27,000 rubles.
In addition, he was reportedly stripped of his rank as a medical service reserve major. The verdict can be appealed.
Ihar Yurkevich was born in 1976 in Stolin, coming from a medical dynasty. His father was head of a department in the district hospital, and his mother worked there as a nurse.
Yurkevich graduated with honors from Grodno Medical University but was assigned to his small homeland. After several years of work in Stolin, he moved to the Minsk Infectious Disease Hospital. From 2009-2011, Yurkevich was its chief physician, after which he became an official.
From 2011-2014, he was the first deputy chairman of the healthcare committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee, and from 2014-2017, he was the chairman of the committee.

From 2017-2019, Yurkevich was the vice-mayor of Minsk, responsible for social issues. He tried to portray himself as an open official, cycling with journalists. In general, he gave his first interview to independent media, for which he later received criticism from state propaganda. At the same time, it was under Yurkevich's signature that the response came stating that the memorial plaque for the 100th anniversary of the BPR would not be installed.
