A Minsk Woman Got a Cute Rooster Instead of a Dog and Walks Him Around the City, Even Going to Cafes
The ornamental rooster Shalopenye sleeps with his owner and accompanies her on her way to the pharmacy or post office. Elena Shchatko, a Minsk resident, told "Smartpress" how she got this unusual pet.
Elena is 54 years old, works in a veterinary clinic, and lives with her husband in a private house. Previously, she kept parrots and canaries. A year ago, together with a friend, she bought eggs of ornamental chickens of the Malaysian Serama breed and an incubator. That's how Shalopenye appeared.
The rooster is now almost a year old. He is small: about 25 cm tall and weighs 500 g. He roams freely around the house and accompanies his owner everywhere, eating at the table from his own small plate. The rooster sleeps with his owner in bed on a towel and doesn't wake her at dawn: he has adapted to her routine and only crows after she gets up.
Elena often takes Shalopenye into the city: they walk on the streets, go to cafes, and if necessary, to the post office or pharmacy.
"When I have a day off, I'm everywhere with him. I say: 'Let's go for a walk!', and he already runs to the car. I open the door - and Shalopenye jumps into the front seat himself, where his mattress lies. He spends the entire trip on it, literally not moving (he doesn't run around the car's interior)."
In a year, they have never been denied entry to a cafe. There, the rooster sits on a towel on the back of a chair. He isn't afraid of dogs, but he asks to be picked up when crows, who hunt him, are around.
Most passers-by react with curiosity: they take photos, ask to pet him, especially children, some of whom have never seen a live rooster.
