Kalesnikava: Europe's openness to Belarus and Belarusians, not to the regime, can reduce Russia's influence
In an interview with DW, Maria Kalesnikava refuted claims that she has softened her stance on Alexander Lukashenka's regime, increasingly speaking about the need for dialogue. The activist believes that her own story confirms the effectiveness of diplomacy.

«We are talking here with you now precisely because diplomacy was used as a tool of influence, as a tool for achieving certain goals,» said Maria Kalesnikava, stressing that years of imprisonment have not changed her attitude towards the system.
«If we already see that the American negotiation track has worked, then it should be utilized,» Kalesnikava noted.
«Europe's openness to Belarus and Belarusians, not to the regime, can reduce Russia's sphere of influence in the country,» Kalesnikava noted, calling this a goal of European security architecture.
The activist called on the European Union to follow the example of the US model, specifically mentioning the recent negotiations between Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhenkov, which took place in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. After the meeting, Sikorski, among other things, stated that Warsaw is preparing to open a new building for its embassy in Minsk.
