On August 20, 2026, the United States national debt reached approximately $40.05 trillion, thus surpassing another historical milestone. For comparison: the US national debt exceeded $30 trillion about four and a half years ago, and ten years ago it stood at approximately $19.4 trillion, CNBC reports .
The debt growth is occurring amidst a persistent large federal budget deficit. In July, it reached $432.3 billion — the highest figure since spring 2021. Since the beginning of the current fiscal year, the cumulative deficit has approached $1.8 trillion, exceeding the figure for the corresponding period last year.
At the same time, the cost of servicing government debt is becoming increasingly expensive for the U.S. In the current fiscal year, nearly $1.2 trillion has already been spent on interest payments on the national debt. This is one of the largest federal expenditure items — only social programs and healthcare spending remain larger.
The growth in debt and debt servicing costs also impacts the US government bond market. Treasury yields have significantly risen, reflecting investors' concerns about the scale of government borrowing and future budget expenditures.
Against this backdrop, the US Treasury Department announced an increase in the volume of operations to repurchase long-term government bonds.
