Germany Closes Russian Consulate in Bonn and "Russian House" in Berlin
German authorities stated that Russia is responsible for the drone incident at Leipzig airport, which occurred in August. This was reported by German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, writes Deutsche Welle.
According to Alexander Dobrindt, this conclusion was reached after studying the design of the drones and individual components used in other hybrid incidents. German intelligence also identified individuals who allegedly acted on behalf of Russian state structures.
Dobrindt stated that the planning of the attack was professional, but its direct execution was carried out by lower-level agents. He also warned that Germany could become a target for new hybrid attacks from Russia.
In response, Germany will close Russia's Consulate General in Bonn by September 18 and cancel the agreement on the operation of the "Russian House" in Berlin.
According to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Germany will strengthen control over the entry of Russian citizens, and the Russian ambassador will be summoned for explanations. The government also plans to take additional measures in the area of intelligence services, strengthening its own defense capabilities, and deterring Russia.
Wadephul emphasized that Germany will continue to resolutely support Ukraine.
Moscow has already stated that it will respond to Germany's anti-Russian decisions. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russia would respond to all such measures.
NATO leadership expressed full solidarity with Germany. Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that NATO would continue to strengthen its ability to defend allied countries against similar threats.
The incident that directly prompted these actions occurred on August 4 at Leipzig airport. According to German media, several drones may have been involved in an attempted attack on a Ukrainian An-124 cargo plane. One drone with explosives was found near Ukrainian cargo planes, and another likely crashed into a DHL cargo plane.
