"How to survive in an emergency situation". On September 24, a nationwide safety awareness day will be held in Belarus

First of all, attention will be paid to facilities with mass gatherings of people: large shopping and entertainment centers, cultural and sports institutions, as well as facilities where children are present. Employees of such organizations will not only attend theoretical classes but also practice practical skills. In some institutions, especially educational ones, employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations will participate in the training.

In all regions of the country, 139 thematic platforms will operate on September 24 in places of mass gatherings. There, one can receive information about safe behavior and the conduct of the Unified Safety Day.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations also recommends that heads of organizations check the condition of fire suppression systems, the serviceability of fire automation, and whether evacuation routes comply with requirements.

A representative of the Ministry of Emergency Situations noted that the need for such events is related to regular emergency situations in various countries. One example was the fire in 2018 at the "Zimnyaya Vishnya" shopping and entertainment center in Kemerovo, Russia, after which the Unified Safety Day began to be held in Belarus.

In Belarus, from 2024 to August 2026, 34 fires occurred at facilities with mass gatherings of people. Most of them were related to malfunctions in electrical networks and equipment. Most often, fires occurred in commercial enterprises.

In December 2024, a fire occurred at the "Belarus" shopping center in Vitebsk. More than 2 thousand square meters were damaged by fire. During the fire extinguishing operation, rescuers saved 10 people and evacuated 215 people from the building, including 40 children. There were no fatalities, but 17 people were injured, including two children.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations notes that a large number of victims during fires is often associated with evacuation errors, panic, and buildings not complying with fire safety requirements.

If a fire alarm goes off or a person notices smoke, fire, or other signs of ignition, there is no time to waste. It is necessary to quickly assess the situation and leave the building, moving to a safe place.

If it is known that people remain in the building, this should be reported to the rescuers working on site, or by calling 101 or 112 to report the presumed location of the people.
