Was in "Slavic Cathedral", made Shushkevich a deputy: five facts about Vsevolod Yanchevsky

Alexander Lukashenka has appointed Vsevolod Yanchevsky as the director of the High-Tech Park Administration. Prior to this, Vsevolod held the position of assistant to the president for ideology for nine years.

"Nasha Niva" recalls pages from the biography of one of the most progressive and most cautious Belarusian officials.

Originator from "Slavic Cathedral"

Vsevolod Yanchevsky was born in 1976 in Borisov. He started attracting attention while still a schoolboy. In 1992, a full-page letter appeared in the newspaper "Respublika" with a note from the editor: "Isn't it interesting what a 16-year-old thinks about our time?" Yanchevsky lamented the collapse of the Soviet Union: "By fate, we found ourselves legally and politically isolated from Russia," but the author hoped that this separation was temporary. It also mentioned the desire of national democrats to bring Belarus "into ruinous dependence on the West."

Vsevolod became an activist of the Slavic Cathedral "White Rus'" party. The same one that included Sergey Kostyan, Yuri Azarenok, and other odious figures. The party's flag was black-yellow-white, like that of Russian monarchists. It was liquidated in 1999. The party stood for the ideas of pan-Russian unity.

In the 1994 elections, the Slavic Cathedral "White Rus'" supported Alexander Lukashenka, and Yanchevsky became an authorized representative of the presidential candidate. At this time, he began to move away from the ideas of Slavism.

Made Stanislav Shushkevich a deputy

In the 1995 Supreme Soviet elections, Vsevolod Yanchevsky unexpectedly became the head of Stanislav Shushkevich's election headquarters.

"He is a smart and educated person. He did me no harm, so I can't say anything bad about him," Stanislav Shushkevich told "NN." "I have a weakness: I love talented, hardworking, and professional people. And I don't delve into their origins, family relations, etc. Yanchevsky made me a deputy. I remember that he was publishing the magazine 'Planeta.' He did it quite well, to be frank. After those events in the mid-1990s, I never contacted him again."

In those elections to the Supreme Soviet, democrats still won — Stanislav Shushkevich, Stanislav Bahdankevich, Andrei Klimau, and others.

Counteracted the opposition, headed "Lukamol"

When Lukashenka became president, Yanchevsky founded the organization "Direct Action." Some historians call the main goal of this organization counteracting street actions of the opposition. In fact, it was the only organization that was somehow capable of street protests. It is said that in internal documents, Yanchevsky was even considered the head of "Direct Action."

In the late 1990s, a significant event for Yanchevsky occurred — his acquaintance with the country's leader's eldest son, Viktor. At that time, they studied together at BSU in the Faculty of International Relations. It is said that Vsevolod's rise is precisely linked to Viktor's figure.

It was then believed that Yanchevsky could handle youth well. He looked especially advantageous against the background of the amorphous Belarusian Youth Union. The creation of a mass youth organization, "Belarusian Patriotic Youth Union," began, which Yanchevsky headed. Popularly, this structure would be called "Lukamol" for its unconditional support of the country's leader.

Young deputy and editor

Yanchevsky was only 24 years old when he became a deputy of the House of Representatives. In 2000, he was elected in the Slutsk electoral district; those elections were boycotted by the opposition.

"In Slutsk, they still remember the glossy postcards that the deputy sent to all women in the city for March 8, and at festive concerts in the local House of Culture, he gave each lady a carnation," gazetaby.com wrote about Yanchevsky.

In 2005, Yanchevsky was appointed editor-in-chief of the magazine "Planeta," which excoriated global conspiracies, criticized the Orange Revolution, and contained plenty of criticism of the Belarusian opposition. The magazine was focused on international topics.

Even after his departure, Yanchevsky continued to oversee the publication for a long time, making important decisions on editorial policy.

Curated the internet

In April 2008, Yanchevsky was appointed assistant to Lukashenka for ideology. He outlasted Nyavyhlas, Makei, Kabyakou, Kasiabets in the Presidential Administration. It can be said that Yanchevsky was one of those who held a high position in the ruling elite for the longest time. What is the secret to such longevity? Caution and intellect.

Yanchevsky curated the internet; Lukashenka called him an "observer" of the internet. But it is worth noting that under Yanchevsky, the internet was and remains free.

It is worth noting an interesting fact: in 2008, before the return of "Nasha Niva" and "Narodnaya Volya" to subscription catalogs and kiosks, Vsevolod Yanchevsky held a meeting with the editors. It was from him that the newspaper employees learned that they would once again be in state distribution systems.
