Lithuania will not allow Belarusian potash through Klaipėda despite US sanctions lifting

The ban on the transit of Belarusian fertilizers through Klaipėda State Seaport is not planned to be lifted. This was announced by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys on LRT radio.

Despite the lifting of restrictions on the supply of Belarusian potash, announced by US Special Envoy for Belarus John Kohle during his visit to Belarus, Lithuania will maintain the ban on its import and transit.

"The sanctions imposed against Belarus by the European Union continue to apply both to the import of fertilizers and to the conclusion of transit agreements. We adhere to them," Budrys stated.

He also expressed hope that Latvia and Poland would adhere to a similar position regarding the import of Belarusian potash through their ports.

Lithuania introduced a ban on the transportation of Belarusian potash fertilizers from February 1, 2022. Prior to this, approximately 11 million tons of Belarusian potash were transported annually by rail through Lithuanian territory.
