At the Academy of Sciences, Artificial Intelligence is Taught to Manage Urban Transport Schedules
Belarus is developing intelligent systems that in the future will be able to adapt urban transport operations in real-time to the needs of the city and its residents. Mikhail Kavalyou, chief researcher at the Mathematical Cybernetics Laboratory of the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, spoke about this direction of urban infrastructure development.
According to the scientist, traditional methods of schedule compilation are no longer always able to cope with modern conditions. Urban life is constantly changing: the number of passengers and transport movement are affected by weather, traffic jams, mass events, seasonality, and other factors. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly difficult for dispatchers to manually account for all these circumstances in real-time.
At the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, so-called "nature-inspired algorithms" are being developed to solve such problems. These are complex mathematical models capable of finding optimal solutions for tasks with thousands of variables in a matter of minutes. For a human, calculating such options could take hours.
The use of neural networks and other artificial intelligence technologies allows for more efficient route planning, transport distribution, and resource saving.
However, according to Mikhail Kavalyou, the main benefit of such digitalization is not only in saving funds. The most valuable result is saving people's time — both passengers and transport system employees.
