Donald Trump has sparked a new conflict with Denmark by appointing a special envoy to Greenland — the massive Arctic island he reportedly wanted to annex.

When asked by the BBC about the new position of Jeff Landry, the Republican Governor of Louisiana, Trump stated that the US needs Greenland for "national security" and that "we have to have it."
According to him, Landry will serve as a special envoy to Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The move provoked outrage in Copenhagen, where officials stated they would summon the US ambassador "for an explanation." Greenland's Prime Minister noted that the island should "decide its own future" and that its "territorial integrity must be respected."
Governor Landry stated in a post on platform X that it was an honor for him to serve in a "volunteer capacity to make Greenland part of the USA."
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has renewed his long-standing interest in Greenland, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth. He refused to rule out the possibility of using force to establish control over the island – a stance that shocked Denmark, a NATO ally that traditionally had close relations with Washington.
"We're going to have to resolve it," Trump added. "We need Greenland for national security, not because of the minerals."
Trump specifically mentioned Chinese and Russian ships as potential threats in the nearby waters.
Greenland, home to approximately 57,000 people, has enjoyed extensive self-governance since 1979, although defense and foreign policy remain under Denmark's jurisdiction. While most Greenlanders advocate for future independence from Denmark, public opinion polls show overwhelming dissatisfaction with and opposition to the idea of joining the US.
