On the afternoon of December 27, a new lava emission was recorded, reaching a height of 300-400 meters. The eruption occurred in the northeastern crater after a brief lull, reported the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Italy.

The lava flows were accompanied by a strong emission of ash and pyroclastic material, which rose several kilometers above the volcano's summit. The wind moved the ash clouds in a westerly direction. In the evening, monitoring cameras recorded intense flashes of light from the northeastern crater.
The active phase of the eruption has been ongoing since December 24, but thick cloud cover makes accurate assessment of the events difficult. Operations at Catania Airport, located nearby, are not interrupted, but a red alert level has been established for air traffic.
