Talks between US and Ukrainian Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy could lead to the first phone conversation between the Ukrainian leader and Vladimir Putin in more than five years, Fox News reported, citing an informed source.
According to her, the organization of direct phone talks between the leaders of the two warring countries will be a "diplomatic victory" for the American president. "Trump appears to be the most successful mediator because they both — Putin and Zelenskyy — perceive each other emotionally, and that's a challenge," the TV channel's interlocutor explained.
He reminded that the Russian and Ukrainian presidents had not spoken since July 2020, when Kyiv conducted an operation against PMC "Wagner" mercenaries, luring them into Belarus. At the same time, Zelenskyy repeatedly tried to arrange a phone call with Putin, but the latter refused. "In August and September 2024, there were opportunities for a conversation, but they disappeared again when Ukraine invaded the Kursk region," the source noted. At the same time, even before the breakdown of communications, relations between the leaders of the two countries were tense. "During negotiations, Putin always remained silent, while Zelenskyy tried to establish contact," the Fox News interlocutor added.
