Denmark became the first country in Europe to completely abandon paper letter delivery by postal service, CNN reports.
The reason for this step was a sharp drop in demand. According to 2024 data, the volume of paper letters sent in the country decreased by more than 90% compared to peak indicators of the early 2000s.
Citizens and businesses have long switched to electronic means of communication, and public services have been almost entirely digitized.
The national postal operator PostNord has already begun the practical implementation of the reform: the dismantling of about 1500 street mailboxes has started throughout the country. Their sale unexpectedly became popular among Danes, turning the old blue boxes into nostalgic artifacts of a bygone era. At the same time, the company will continue and even increase parcel delivery, which is facilitated by the e-commerce boom.
