A plane with Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores landed in New York at Stewart Air National Guard Base. They were escorted out by more than a dozen federal agents. A sack was placed over Maduro's head.

The U.S. captured Maduro and his wife on January 3 and removed them from Venezuela. The couple was taken directly from their residence's bedroom. First, they were transported by helicopter, then placed on the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima. They are to be tried in the U.S.
63-year-old Nicolás Maduro led Venezuela since 2013. The West did not recognize the election results according to which he was re-elected for new terms.
