"With great concern and hope, the whole world is watching what is happening in Iran today. For decades, the country has been under the full control of a totalitarian radical Islamic leadership. There is no freedom or democracy in the country. Tens of thousands of political prisoners have passed through Iranian prisons, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi.
Now, the Iranian people have risen up. Numerous protests are taking place in the country against the dire economic situation and the lack of freedoms. In response, the authorities have shut down the internet and used brutal measures to punish protesters. Thousands of people have been arrested and tortured. Police and other military units are shooting at peaceful rallies and gatherings. The number of victims, including women and children, according to Iranian human rights defenders, runs into the thousands.
In this critical situation, I admire the courage of the protesters in Iran who, despite mortal danger, stand up for their rights and justice. I call on all international organizations, governments of democratic countries to make every effort to stop the violence by the Iranian authorities against peaceful protesters. I call on the Iranian authorities to hear the voice of the people and begin negotiations with the demonstrators.
The world must stop the rivers of blood that have flooded the streets of Iranian cities!", Ales Bialiatski declared.
In Iran, on December 28, mass protests began against the country's government. Almost immediately, the authorities began a brutal crackdown on the protests, as a result of which, according to Reuters, at least 2,000 people died. In addition, according to preliminary information, more than 10,000 people have been arrested.
