Minsk plans to quadruple the size of the psychiatric hospital on Bekhtereva Street

The Minsk City Clinical Center of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, located in a forest area near the Partizanskaya metro station, is facing fundamental changes. A reconstruction project, which envisages the creation of a gigantic hospital complex, has been put forward for public discussion.

According to the presented architectural and planning concept, the existing building at Bekhtereva Street, 5, built in 1971, will be reconstructed. But the main changes will happen nearby: on the center's territory, which covers more than three hectares, two entirely new buildings are planned to be erected.

The most significant object of the future construction will be an inpatient building, with a total area of about 13,000 square meters. Next to it, a smaller outpatient building with an area of about 4,800 square meters will be erected.

As a result of these plans, the total area of the medical institution will increase approximately fourfold, as it currently stands at only about 5.5 thousand square meters.

The project also provides for an increase in the number of parking spaces on the territory to 64, with additional parking areas appearing along Bekhtereva Street. At the same time, developers promise to preserve green spaces as much as possible.

MRI, Resuscitation, and a Separate Department for the Elderly

The designers plan to house psychiatric departments in the inpatient block, some of which will be specialized: in addition to two general ones, a separate gerontological department for the elderly and a department for borderline conditions are planned. This will allow for the separation of patients with different diagnoses.

The medical base will be significantly strengthened: the project includes its own resuscitation department, a centralized sterilization department, a hospital pharmacy, and even an MRI department, which will greatly improve on-site diagnostics.

The outpatient building will take on the function of a polyclinic. It will house specialist doctors' offices, the center's administration, an archive, and all services related to document issuance: the sick leave registration office, premises for medical examinations, and the medical advisory commission.

Why this is necessary

The need for such grandiose transformations is explained by the decentralization of services and poor conditions for patients. Today, the center's subdivisions are scattered across the city: apart from the main building on Bekhtereva, the City Center for Borderline Conditions is crammed into the first floor of a residential building on Mendeleeva Street, and Psychiatric Day Stay Department No. 2 is in a residential building on Kommunisticheskaya Street.

In the Bekhtereva inpatient facility itself, the situation is described as critical. Patients lie in wards of nine people, which, according to medical professionals, does not contribute to a normal psychological climate and violates sanitary standards.

Furthermore, overcrowding does not allow for separating patient flows: those who come for a preventive check-up for a certificate, and those who suffer from real mental disorders. The construction of new buildings should solve these problems and gather all services in one place.

It is worth noting that quite recently, in 2025, the design organization "Bradek" had already developed a construction project for the modernization of the buildings at Bekhtereva, 5 and 5/1. The work was completed in the same year, though externally, it was limited to painting the facades in a depressive brown-grey geometric pattern.

The new project envisions a more life-affirming look: the facades of the new buildings are presented with large light panels, with wood-look lamellas, and windows in contrasting dark frames. The old building in the renders is also re-painted in light colors.

How to participate in the discussion

Public discussion of the concept will take place from March 9 to March 23, 2026. Project materials will be displayed in the foyer of the Zavodskoy District Administration (Zhyvunovіcha St., 17, "one-window" service) and posted on the official website of the district administration. Additionally, from March 11 to March 23, a video presentation of the project will be available on the administration's website.

Citizens can leave their comments and suggestions in a journal at the administration building or send them to the email [email protected] with the mandatory subject "public discussion". The customer for the current project is the same communal enterprise "Medik". The results of the discussion will be summarized at the Architectural and Urban Planning Council under the Chief Architect of Minsk.
