Babaryka: I was a candidate convenient for all Belarusians. Those who were for Russia lived in the myth that it was beneficial for Russia

In a new episode of TOK, Viktar Babaryka explained why, already on the third day after announcing his intention to run in the elections, he understood that he was almost guaranteed to win.

As Viktar Babaryka recalls, on May 13, 2020, the electronic registration system for his initiative group began operating.

"And then what happened, happened. People came who dedicated all their abilities and talents to make it happen. (...) It turned out that this step (nomination for president — NN) was actually needed not only by me and my grandchildren or my responsibility towards my grandchildren. It turned out that Belarusians really needed it," the politician notes and adds:

"On the third day, I already understood that we were almost guaranteed to win. (...) When there were 10 thousand [members of the initiative group], we understood the power of the network effect and had a clear understanding of how much the anticipation of a different Belarus lived in Belarus."

When asked why people were willing to cast their vote for him, Babaryka replies:

"It was a candidacy convenient for all Belarusians. Those who were for Russia lived in the myth that it was beneficial for Russia, and happiness would come to us.

Those who lived and thought about Belarus saw the projects we undertook in support of Belarus and said, yes, this is a real [candidate], someone who will genuinely continue to do something for Belarus.

Those who simply wanted economic things also saw in me a figure who, "well, if he himself did something, then there's a chance to do something (for the country — NN)." If he clearly had everything he needed, then he can already do something (for Belarus — NN).

This was, it seems to me, the very candidate who satisfied everyone's interest because he was nobody's. He was nobody's, and therefore anyone could claim him, from a government official to a Russia-oriented person."
