On February 28, 2026, a Ukrainian drone strike hit the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs training ground near the settlement of Lazurne in the occupied Kherson region.
As a result, five police officers ranging in rank from major to lieutenant were killed, and six more were wounded. All of them were non-local, having previously served in Moscow, Yaroslavl, Kirov, Khanty-Mansiysk, Tatarstan, Adygea, Amur, and Sverdlovsk regions.
At that moment, training exercises were taking place at the training ground for employees of the 'Hola Prystan' Department of Internal Affairs.
During the first strike, five officers were killed. Several more people were wounded, including the management and employees of the same department.
Half an hour after the incident, the head of the department himself, Alexander Shcheglov, arrived at the scene. At that moment, a second drone strike was carried out. As a result, the chief sustained severe shrapnel wounds to his abdomen and legs.
It is also reported that the 11-year-old son of one of the deputy chiefs was injured, sustaining a severe jaw wound.
Among those killed in this attack is Veronika Velmamedova — a lieutenant, inspector of the 'Hola Prystan' Department of Internal Affairs, who came to the occupied territories from Khanty-Mansiysk. Meanwhile, Russian propaganda presented her as a volunteer and teacher who helped educate Ukrainian children in the Russian spirit.
It is known that she arrived in the Kherson region in 2023 as part of a 'pedagogical landing party,' worked as a teacher in the village of Zaliznyi Port, and later got a job in the police. In the funeral photos, she is shown already in police uniform.
