The US has already planned a ground operation in Iran, and it could begin in the near future, journalist Alex Ward of The Wall Street Journal reported, citing three Republicans in Congress, including the chairmen of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees.
In recent weeks, Iran has been deploying additional units and air defense assets to Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf, preparing for a possible US military operation to seize it, CNN reports.
As the channel notes, the US presidential administration is considering using American troops to seize the island in the northeastern Persian Gulf to put pressure on the Iranians and force them to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision, sources report.
