This actress received the most "Oscars" in history — but never came to accept them

Katharine Hepburn is the actress with the most "Oscars" in the "Best Actress" category.

Over almost 50 years, she received this award four times — but never once attended the ceremony to collect it in person, writes Vogue.

Katharine Hepburn didn't fit into conventions. She easily clashed with the press, disliked publicity, and treated fame in her own way. Yet, it was she who became an Oscar record-holder: four awards in the "Best Actress" category — more than anyone else in film history.

Katharine Hepburn was born on May 12, 1907, in Hartford.

She was not related to Audrey Hepburn, despite the same surname.

For her time, she was a new type of actress — strong, independent, without the desire to conform to others' expectations.

In the 1920s, she began her career in theater on Broadway. Later, she was noticed by producers and got her first film role — in "A Bill of Divorcement" (1932). Just a year later, at 26, she received her first "Oscar" for the film "Morning Glory" (1933). She received three more awards in subsequent decades.

Katharine Hepburn's four "Oscars" attest to her wide acting range and ability to work with diverse roles.

She constantly evolved, and this is evident not only in the films that earned her awards but also in those for which she received nominations. In total, Hepburn was nominated for an "Oscar" 12 times. Only Meryl Streep has more nominations among actresses — 21.

Here are four films for which Katharine Hepburn won an "Oscar":

"Morning Glory" (1933)

In this film, she plays Eva Lovelace — an ambitious actress who moves to New York to build a career on Broadway.

In one scene, she promises herself not to repeat the fate of actors who quickly become famous and just as quickly lose fame. This decision echoes Hepburn's own career.

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967)

In this social drama, Katharine Hepburn plays Christina Drayton — a mother who, in 1960s USA, learns that her daughter wants to marry a Black man. The film addresses themes of racism, generational conflict, and different perceptions of a woman's role.

Her long-time partner, Spencer Tracy, also starred in the film. During filming, he was seriously ill, and everyone understood it was his last movie. In the scene with his final monologue, Hepburn cries — and these tears were real. 17 days after filming wrapped, Tracy passed away.

According to close friends, Hepburn never watched the final version of the film.

"The Lion in Winter" (1968)

Here she plays Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine — a strong and intelligent woman who finds herself at the center of a power struggle between her husband Henry II and their sons. Her character is complex and multifaceted: confident, far-sighted, capable of influencing others, but at the same time vulnerable in her desire to be loved and not lose power.

"On Golden Pond" (1981)

In this film, Katharine Hepburn plays Ethel Thayer — an elderly woman who lives with her husband Norman (Henry Fonda) in a house by the lake. Ethel is a warm, open person who tries to maintain family balance despite age and complicated relationships.

It is a story about family, aging, and accepting change. The role became one of the strongest in her career, and it was for this that she received her fourth "Oscar."

Despite her achievements, Katharine Hepburn did not attend the ceremonies. She said: "Awards mean nothing. My real reward is the work."

She only appeared on the Oscar stage once in 1974 — to present an award to producer Lawrence Weingarten.

She did not want to conform to classic notions of femininity in Hollywood.

Hepburn rejected the image of a "weak woman" and chose roles of strong, intelligent, and independent heroines, which shaped a new understanding of female characters in cinema.

After her success in the early 1930s, her popularity briefly declined — she was even included in a list of "box-office poison" actors. But she bought the rights to "The Philadelphia Story" (1940) and used it to return to the industry. It worked — she received an "Oscar" nomination. In the 1940s-1950s, she definitively established herself as one of Hollywood's strongest actresses and continued acting until the 1990s.

She became a symbol of androgynous style.

In times of strict beauty standards, she often wore trousers — which was atypical for the 1930s-1940s. Her restrained style became a recognizable trait and influenced subsequent generations of women.

She was in a relationship with Spencer Tracy for over 20 years. They met on the set of "Woman of the Year" (1942) and were together until his death in 1967.

Their relationship was not official because Tracy was married and did not divorce for religious reasons. Hepburn accepted this and called him the love of her life.

She was an athlete. In addition to acting, she played tennis, swam, golfed, played baseball, and cricket. From a young age, she led an active lifestyle and maintained it into old age.

Her voice was unique. Katharine Hepburn had clear diction and a characteristic New England accent, which became her recognizable trait and enhanced her image of a strong and confident woman both in life and on screen.
