Merz believes that what Trump is currently doing is not de-escalation or an attempt to achieve a peaceful resolution, but "a massive escalation with an uncertain outcome."
"These are escalations that already pose a threat. Not only to those directly affected, but to all of us," he emphasized.
The German Chancellor also expressed doubts about the possibility of overthrowing the Iranian regime.
"Is regime change really the goal? If that's the goal, I don't believe they will achieve it. Such attempts have mostly ended in failure," Merz added.
He also expressed doubt as to whether the US-Israel war against Iran is close to its end.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump criticized Merz for statements that Berlin does not consider the US war with Iran its business. The American leader responded to him by saying that then "Ukraine is not our war."
